Shelly Laurent escapes her life as a high-class escort, but against her better judgment she takes the scared young Ella with her. In retaliation, her pimp and his dirty cops frame them both for murder. On the run, Shelly turns to the one man who could be her salvation: Detective Luke Cameron. She doesn't know if she can trust him or if he's just a mirage, but she needs his help to free them all.
With a heart forged in fire and irreverence born of necessity, Shelly fights Ella's demons--and faces her own. She throws light on the shadows of Chicago's underworld, challenging everything she knew and the man she's come to love. Together, a prostitute and a cop fight for truth stronger than secrets, hope deeper than deception, and a bond more enduring than betrayal.

This Is the second book of the lost girls series by Mrs. Lin, and I have to say the mystery/drama in this one kept me on my toes. As I've stated before this series created by Mrs. Lin is not one for the faint of heart. She touches on very sensitive topics many women face today. This book was no different. I can only describe it as emotionally disturbing/dark/heart breaking and LOL funny... Yes I'm sure you guys are thinking I'm nuts, but trust me I laughed/giggled just as much I had heart breaking moments. This is Shelly's story. We know shelly from book one as the best friend of Allie, secret lover/escort of Phillip ( who I love btw), and the funny/sarcastic/beautiful hooker in love with officer LUKE. Well this book begins with shelly trying to get out of the Life of prostitution. Seriously this book had me thinking of the movie pretty woman the whole time with the exception the male lead was a COP. Does anyone else not see the irony of this story a hooker falling in love with a cop? I had to giggle to myself at times lol. (Ok yes I'm lane I know as my lil sis would say, lol).
Shelly and Luke's relationship has been pretty strained since the shooting occurred....If you haven't read book one you may want to stop reading this review.....Go to your nearest kindle/nook site and get started. Shelly feels with her career choice she isn't good enough for Luke. I mean she's a hooker and he's a golden boy cop. As this story plays out we see shelly push Luke away with the hope her feelings for him will go away also. Ummm ya right that never happens. What shelly didn't realize Is she would need to call upon the good cop's services sooner than later. For what you ask?
After a hooker party gone wrong( some people end up getting killed) she finds herself basically the guardian/protector (while on the run) of a teenage girl Claire aka Ella. This little girl was sooooo annoying to me in the beginning, but I have to admit as the story progressed she grew on me. In need of protection shelly runs to the one man she knows has the means to keep her safe, PHILLIP ( lol you thought I was going to say Luke huh, smh). Still a little pissed off about ratting him out to the cops, he still offers protection for her the girl. I mean she did take a bullet for him. I already loved Phillips character before this but the humorous interaction/chemistry between Phillip/claire was Great. My gut is telling me there's something there Mrs. Lin lol.
Well Shelly's never been one to follow directions /rules (stubborn), so she starts her on digging/investigation. I loved Shelly's character. Throughout this book she proved to be a STRONG woman despite the hand life had dealt her. But as we see or hear about so often with damaged women, feelings of SELF WORTH was a huge deal in her life. Luke's character I loved equally. We got to see deeper into his life past and present. He continued to fight for shelly no matter how hard she pushed him away. This book was full of drama/mystery and secrets. Also lets note forget hot bad a** men, pimps, hookers, and brothel's . Later in the book we see Shelly's feelings/issues with self worth are not hers alone.... Yup Mr. Cop has plenty of issues as well. Oh the secrets! As far as my hate/dislike of characters, Shelly's father took the number one spot in this category. Ugggh this man there are no words, smh.
I have to say I liked this book better than book one. The drama/mystery drew me in from beginning to end. The chemistry between shelly and Luke was great. Some scenes trust me you wont forget Pure Utter HOTNESS ! Mrs. Lin never gave the reader a dull moment. I did wish we could have seen more of Phillip/Claire's interaction(sigh)....yes yes I know Phillips story is book three, but still a girl can hope (wink).
Great job Mrs. Lin on book two of a great series. Before I end this review I have to just say the secrets in this book left me with Sooooo many WTH moments its crazy. Can't wait to read more from you Mrs. Lin.
Book Rating: A/4.5 stars
