Goodreads Description:
Lilith Bresson, an independent, successful young artist, is forced to travel from her home in Spain to the wild borderlands of northern England, to repay her feckless father’s latest debt by painting a portrait of the enigmatic Lady Blaine Albermarle.
On her first night at Albermarle Hall she meets Finn Strachan, Blaine’s ‘companion’, a cultured and hauntingly beautiful young man who seems to have it all. But Lilith has an artist’s eye, and a gift for seeing what lies beneath the skin. She soon discovers that Blaine is more gaoler than lover, and if the price is right, depravity has no limits.
As the weeks pass, Lilith finds that she too is drawn into the malign web that her patron has spun, yet against the odds she forges a strong friendship with the damaged, dysfunctional Finn. In a dark, modern twist to an age-old story, Lilith Bresson proves that sometimes it’s the princess who needs to become the rescuer.
Please note that this storyline contains depictions of drug abuse, violence and non-consensual sexual activity.
Book Review:
This book had been recommended to me a while back and was sitting in my library for sometime. REGRET! This book took DARK READ to a whole new level for me. Honestly I haven't found another book in my dark read category that had amazed me since captive in the dark series by CJ Roberts. Well that had officially changed. If you loved Mrs. Robert's captive in the dark series give Mrs. Mcgown's book a go!
This book was so overwhelming at times that I had to stop. Trust me it is not for the faint of heart! Along with all the twisted things going on in this one you can add psychological Mind F**k to that list also. This is the story of Lilith Breeson. She is a famous artist with a go to hell attitude, serious sexual appetite, and a mind reader. Living her life in Spain without worry (or so she thought) until one day her deadbeat father comes knocking on her door. WTH does he want? Money...No...her services for a Breeson masterpiece to lady Blaine albermarle. Wanting to telling her father to F off wasn't an option due to her half brother's fate. Lilith didn't do love until it came to her special needs little brother.
Equipped with enough hatred for her father to last a lifetime, Lilith sets out for England to payoff her fathers debt. Once at the albermarle estate Lilith notices things are not normal to say the least. Again remember she has a gift of reading people and finding what makes them tick. Right away she knew Blaine was shady/dangerous but her male counterpart was the most beautiful man she ever laid eyes own.
“Finn Strachan stole my breath.”-Lilith
As the days and weeks pass at the estate the psychological mind game Blaine is playing can only be described as outrageous and disgusting. Lilith quickly develops a friendship with Finn. Their need/want to protect each other from Blaine was heart wrenching. Finns story was probably the most heartbreaking I've read in a very long time. Majority of his life he's been a sex slave. He'd never experienced love before until Lilith. Unfournately their love for one another leads them a dark/dangerous path.
I loved lilith's character. She was so strong and never gave up on protecting the ones she loved. Her and Finn's willingness to sacrifice their lives for one another was intense and unforgettable.
“Ah. A chuisle. Gaelic. My darling. I prefer the proper translation, mind you. Which is? He gave a bashful smile. My pulse." -Lilith &Finn
Their is only one problem,Blaine. How do you take down the queen bee herself? Outsmart her of course! Mrs. McGown gave us a love story built around sexual abuse and violence. This book is by far one of the best dark reads I've ever read and I don't think I'll ever forget.
Great job Mrs. McGowan! I can't wait for book 2.
Cheers,
