Title: Learning to Fly
Author: Misha Elliott
Typical isn't a word you would use to describe Sophia Ann Marshall's life. Is she the parent? The daughter? The caretaker? Or the one who ruined it all? is there really a white knight that could come rescue her? Sophia's not so sure anymore. When her mom's latest breakup and firing causes them to move the summer before her senior year, Sophie is devastated.
Until she meets star QB, Alexander Matthews. Alex is the beginning of all the firsts Sophie has been dreaming of. Moving has turned her life and the life of her mom, around to exactly where she wanted it to be. Everything is great but will the price of happiness be too high? Can she really give up her dream? Why is life always filled with choices?
But he wants her to choose...Will she give him up to follow her dreams, or give up her dreams to follow him...
We start by meeting Sophia who is counting down the days until she is able to get far away from her mother and all the bad things in her life. Sophia just completed her junior year in high school and has a job and plans for her last summer before freedom. That is until she comes home and finds out they are moving.... AGAIN! She has moved and started over so many times and hates to have to start a new school her senior year.
Sophia and her mom have a very rocky relationship and she has never met her dad. Sophia has been more of an adult than her and raised herself. Her mom didn't want men knowing she had a daughter so she had to call her by her name. There is a lot of history between them that will leave you shaking your head. I love emotional reads like this, they always pull me out of my funks.
Sophia's life takes a drastic turn when she starts her new school! Not only is her mom actually trying, but she starts dating the quarterback of the football team. Now she is just waiting for the other shoe to drop, life can't be this good! She starts wondering what path she wants to take and dreams to follow and if she would be happy giving them up. I am so proud of the choices she makes and I love following her through it all!
The ONLY reason I am not giving this book a 5 is because I was expecting an ending or at least some closure but the cliffhanger came up and slapped me in the face when I least expected it to! I am all about the angst of waiting for the next book and usually don't mind them because they keep you in your toes, but I usually get some sort of closure with them and this one took me by surprise. I would however still reccomend it to all and will read more from Misha!
