Lie Still by Julia Heaberlin Book Review

When Emily Page and her husband move from Manhattan to the wealthy enclave of Clairmont, Texas, she hopes she can finally escape her haunted past—and outrun the nameless stalker who has been taunting her for years. Pregnant with her first child, Emily just wants to start over. But as she is drawn into a nest of secretive Texas women—and into the unnerving company of their queen, Caroline Warwick—Emily finds that acceptance is a very dangerous game.

It isn’t long before Caroline mysteriously disappears and Emily is facing a rash of anonymous threats. Are they linked to the missing Caroline? Or to Emily’s terrifying encounter in college, years earlier? As the dark truth about Caroline emerges, Emily realizes that some secrets are impossible to hide—and that whoever came for Caroline is now coming for her.

Julia Heaberlin, is an award-winning journalist who has directed arts and lifestyle coverage at the Fort-Worth Star Telegram and The Detroit News. She lives with her family in Texas, where she is at work on her next novel of psychological suspense.

This was my first book by mrs. Heaberlin and I can honestly say I was wowed. I am a huge fan of the tv series Dallas and this book put me in the mind of that show...the FEMALE version. I seriously couldn't turn the pages fast enough with this one.  Mrs. Heaberlin gave her readers a great mystery/thriller while hitting on some important topics that are constantly effecting society today such as kidnapping and rape.

This story is told through the eyes of Emily. Emily is a woman with a brutal past but has rebuilt her life. She is now pregnant and her hubby has been given the chief of police job in a small Texas town. Looking to raise their child outside of NYC and with the hope Texas would hold a new beginning for their family, they embark on this new journey. Oh boy they just didn't realize what a roller coaster ride this transition to southern living would be...literally.

Once in Texas Emily is welcomed with open arms by the towns elite. Think female royalty meaning you have to be accepted to the secret society. The leader of this group is Caroline. Seriously think The female version of JR from Dallas. The secondary characters really made this story exceptional to me. They all had secrets everything from  affairs,  plastic surgery, crazy ex husbands, etc.  The old saying "let sleeping dogs lie" did not apply to this group of women. Caroline made it a point to uncover everyone's secrets  including her housekeeper.

Emily's character was one I loved. She had tried to keep her past hidden for so long, she had become numb in a sense to potential danger. I mean if you are receiving threatening letters from a stalker concerning your rape years ago Im pretty sure normal people reach out for help. Well when her back was against the wall she finally came clean to her hubby. Mike oh mike I loved him in this book. Yes he had a hard headed wife but he was going to protect what was his, wife and unborn child.

This story takes a turn when Caroline goes missing and the town is in a uproar of who did it. The secrets and drama that came in this one was great.  The ending of this book let it all hang out, literally. Secrets were revealed that rocked this little Texas town to the core.

Great job mrs. Heaberlin!
