Only for you by Genna Rulon Book Review

“In its purest form love is self-sacrificing, eternal, selfless, enduring, truthful, forgiving and indulgent. It also feels an awful lot like a kick to the stomach when you try to fight it!”

All Everleigh Carsen wanted to do was complete her final semester at Hensley University and begin the life she carefully planned.

When a wave of violent crime seizes campus, Everleigh is persuaded to attend a school sponsored self-defense seminar by her best friend, where she meets volunteer instructor, Hunter Charles. After Everleigh’s biting sarcasm induces Hunter to eject her from class, a tempestuous  relationship is born.

Everleigh is determined to forget the striking man, but fate—that fickle shrew—continuously intervenes. Unable to escape him, she declares Hunter an enemy combatant.  The only complication…Hunter is resolutely pursuing vindication…by any means necessary. Verbal warfare ensues, and despite Everleigh’s ingenious efforts, in Hunter, she has finally found her equal.

Only For You is a compelling tale of friendship, desire, and redemption—brimming with intelligent characters, witty dialogue, unexpected twists, profound sorrow, unfettered hope, and love’s unassailable perseverance.

"When someone tells you something about themselves don’t want to hear—believe them.”

"You’re going to listen to me, and for once you’re going to hear what I say and not read between lines that aren’t there.”

“I was a fool, alone, preparing to do what every fool did at such times—I was going to a bar to drink myself smart.”

“He had a skull and crossbones label on him, but I drank his poison nevertheless and loved it; now I needed an antidote.”

“If you don’t remember your value, no one else will.  Don’t ever settle, Ev.  You’re far too precious a treasure to squander.”

"You'll continue to be a bitch no matter what, but I'm glad you aren't a callous, self-absorbed one."

“I stepped off the merry-go-round for a reason.  It made me dizzy and I kept ending up in the same spot.  It may have been fun for a short ride, but was never headed anywhere.”

"Jose had loosened my tongue; curse him, the ninety proof bastard."

"We played hot potato with my heart—me throwing it to him, him tossing it back to me.  Every time the music stopped, I was always the one holding the bruised organ, out of the game."

I love a book that can bring out so many emotions in me. Mrs. Rulons debut novel took my thoughts back to a time in undergrad where female students had reason to be concerned. In Baton Rouge at one time there was a series of attacks on females near campus that resulted in us having a serial killer. Many families and friends were affected by these attacks. One of the members of my sorority fell victim to these attacks and my thoughts/prayers are with her family as well as those of all victims associated with this Tradgey  especially during this holiday season.  See link below for more info concerning the Baton Rouge, Louisiana serial killer attacks.

http://www.kens5.com/news/Looking-for-answers-in-the-shadow-of-a-serial-killer-118973144.html

This is everleigh and hunters story. Their paths cross in a self defense class everleigh has decided To take after numerous attacks have been occurring on Campus. Hunter is one sexy hardass man that doesn't take any lip. Needless to say ev's personality of speak now think later gets her tossed out of self defense class. Later in the book her and hunters paths cross again on campus and his personality shines through leaving EV with thoughts of he may not be so bad after all. The friendship these two develop as this book plays out is a refreshing yet frustrating read. The chemistry between them is obvious but hunter wants to stay in the friend zone. WHY????? Hunters has secrets and a past that will rock you to the core once you reach the end of this one. Mrs. Rulon did a great job of keeping  the reader intrigued from start to finish by just giving away the right amount of information to keep you guessing. I loved the secondary characters in this one as well. Who doesn't love a great supporting BFF and a hot bartender. I can't wait for sam and griffins story. Great job mrs. Rulon.

Lick by Kylie Scott Book Review

Waking up in Vegas was never meant to be like this.

Evelyn Thomas’s plans for celebrating her twenty-first birthday in Las Vegas were big. Huge. But she sure as hell never meant to wake up on the bathroom floor with a hangover to rival the black plague, a very attractive half-naked tattooed man, and a diamond on her finger large enough to scare King Kong. Now if she could just remember how it all happened.

One thing is for certain, being married to rock and roll’s favourite son is sure to be a wild ride.

Kylie is a long time fan of erotic love stories and B-grade horror films. She demands a happy ending and if blood and carnage occur along the way then all the better. Based in Queensland, Australia with her two children and one delightful husband, she reads, writes and never dithers around on the internet.

Absolutely love this book! This is not your typical rock star romance. Evelyn goes to Vegas for her 21st birthday and ends up waking up in the morning hung over and married.. the worst part of it is she doesn't remember any of it. David is the lead guitarist for Stage Dive and had every attention to keep married to Evelyn but when he realizes that she doesn't remember any of it, he gets mad and says he'll take care of it. The story really takes off from there with one heck of a ride.

I love the characters of this book, not just Evelyn and David. You'll meet other members of the band and close friends of theirs. You will laugh, want to throw things with just the right amount of angst and just totally dive into this story. I was hooked from beginning to end. Not much more to say except just go read it yourself. Awesome story of how these two characters overcome a lot.

Cheers,
  Holly

Poor Little Dead Girls By Lizzie Friend Book Review

“A girl wins a scholarship to an elite boarding school and finds herself entangled in a powerful secret society that threatens her life. Friend writes with a sure, often witty touch … .The story is both immersive and topically relevant. A promising suspense debut.” – Kirkus Reviews

“Will give the toughest of readers goose bumps. With suspenseful pacing and Gothic diction, Friend skillfully develops each character in this novel, which blends themes of romance and friendship with the glam of Cecily von Ziegesar’s Gossip Girl and a sinister private-school mystery reminiscent of Maggie Stiefvater’s Raven Boys”— Booklist

Perfect people aren't just born. They're made.

The first time she is blindfolded and kidnapped, star-athlete and posh boarding school newbie Sadie is terrified. She wakes up in a dark room surrounded by hushed whispers, hooded strangers, and a mysterious voice whispering not-so-sweet nothings in her ear.

But once the robes come off, she realizes it’s just an elaborate prank designed to induct her into the group that’s been pulling the strings at Keating Hall for generations. The circle has it all--incredible connections; fabulous parties; and, of course, an in with the brother society’s gorgeous pledges.

The instant popularity is enough to make Sadie forget about the unexplained marks on her body, the creepy ceremonial rituals, and the incident that befell one of her teammates the year before. So the next time Sadie is kidnapped, she isn’t scared, but she should be. The worst of Keating Hall is yet to come.

When I first read the blurb for this one And scoped out some of the reviews, I thought ok this is pretty little liars meets gossip girl in a sense. Now I haven't watched either show but my little sister is an addict of both. Needless to say I thought what the heck I'll give this one a go.
This was my first read by mrs. Friend.

This is Sadie's story. She is basically the 'scholarship girl'  at a prestigious boarding school. At this school there is a secret society that makes a girl like Sadie see the possibility of bright things for her future. However everything comes with a cost. In a sense I felt Sadie just  wanted belong. Her mom was a member of the secret society so how bad could this be right? Well the answer is really bad!!! The lies and deceit was endless.  The word extreme comes to mind in a few scenes throughout this read as well. When things start to get really strange Sadie goes digging up the near/past happenings at keating hall and discovers some suspicious occurrences. Well with  any secret society I'm sure some secrets are meant to stay buried and the lengths people will go to to keep them that way....ummm frightening!

Some of The secondary characters in this one especially Sadie's roomies I liked. They were the closest  things to someone having her back and that was rather refreshing. This book had some twists and turns that honestly left me literally saying are you freaking serious!! I really hoped i'd fall in love with this book but I didn't. I was able to finish it but honestly found myself picking it up and putting it down numerous times.

Broken Dove By Kristen Ashley Teaser!!!

Far too young, Apollo Ulfr lost Ilsa, his wife, the love of is life and the mother of his two children. The grief of her loss does not settle in his soul, it solders to it. But when he discovers there is a parallel universe where his wife may have a twin, he feels there's hope and sets about bringing her to his world so he can have her back.

But Ilsa Ulfr of our world is married to the parellel universe's twin, Pol, who is not a good man. Not in any way. She's on the run from him and the last thing she wants is to be transported to a fantastical world and be forced to take his side as his wife, even if he is not Pol. And Apollo finds the broken, bitter Ilsa nothing like his beloved and he further wants nothing to do with her.

But darkness is looming and evil is amassing. Apollo must protect his land and keep his family safe, including the new Ilsa.

Kristen Ashley was born in Gary, Indiana, USA. She nearly killed her mother and herself making it into the world, seeing as she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck (already attempting to accessorise and she hadn't taken her first breath!).

Kristen grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana but has lived in Denver, Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus she has been blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her posse is loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write.

Kristen was raised in a house with a large and multi-generational family. They lived on a very small farm in a small town in the heartland and existed amongst the strains of Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched).

Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up.

And as she keeps growing up, it keeps getting better.

Prologue:

Apollo Ulfr saw the dancing lights against his closed eyelids before he felt the presence in the room.

He rolled out of the bed, grabbing the knife from underneath his pillow as he did so. Crouching by the bed, scanning the room even as his eyes became accustomed to the dark, suddenly he felt it and knew it was her.

The witch.
Valentine Rousseau.
Annoyed, seeing as it was the dead of night, he was naked, had not long before sent the

Beniessienne whore to her own bed and he’d told the witch his plans (and these were not his plans, hence the whore who had left), and last, he was in Fleuridia to collect his children from boarding school so he could put them in a safe place before darkness settled on the land, he straightened, doing so speaking.

“Witch, I told you the time and place you were to bring her to me and this is not—”

She interrupted him, her voice, as usual, wry but there was an underlying urgency to it that made his skin prickle.

If you want to meet the Ilsa of my world, I suggest you change your plans.” Through the dark, Apollo narrowed his eyes on her slim shadow.
“And this means...?” he prompted when she said no more.
“This means, the Apollo of my world has found her.”

When last they spoke, she’d explained what that meant.
The Apollo Ulfr of the other world, his twin, was not a good man.
And he’d harmed Ilsa. Because of this, she was evading him.
Now his twin had found her.
Gods damn it, he’d waited bloody years to have his wife back. He wasn’t going to let the

other bloody him in a parallel universe take her away.

Without delay, Apollo bent to collect his clothes from the floor, commanding, “You’ll take me to her.”

“Is that a question?” she asked in reply.
Yanking
up his breeches, he cut his gaze to her shadow. “No, it’s bloody not.”
Thankfully, the maddening witch, who could be sly and perverse, instantly lifted her elegant

hands with her long, slim fingers tipped in scarlet-painted nails and he saw the green mist start to light the room.

“Bring your weapons,” she warned.
Bloody hell.
Ilsa.
“Of course,” he murmured, having yanked on his shirt, he pulled on his boots and moved

quickly to the chair where he’d thrown his cape and saber. “All of them, Apollo,” she went on.
Bloody hell.
He didn’t respond.

He swung his cape around, quickly buckling it on its slant across his chest. He did the same with the scabbard that held his saber. He donned his knife belt, shoved his blade into the sheath and moved to the wardrobe. Bending low, he pulled the knives out of the box at the bottom and shoved them in his boots, one on each side.

The green mist had encompassed the room and he and the witch were both fading by the time he moved to her.

Although he didn’t fall, he felt the ground give way beneath his feet and all faded to black.

When he felt solid beneath him again and their environs came into sharp focus, at what Apollo saw, his blood coursed scalding through his veins, he opened his mouth, and he roared.

Divergent by Veronica Roth Book Review

In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago world, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue--Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is--she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles alongside her fellow initiates to live out the choice they have made. Together they must undergo extreme physical tests of endurance and intense psychological simulations, some with devastating consequences. As initiation transforms them all, Tris must determine who her friends really are--and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes exasperating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers unrest and growing conflict that threaten to unravel her seemingly perfect society, Tris also learns that her secret might help her save the ones she loves . . . or it might destroy her.

http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=WaTl4hyk4mQ&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DWaTl4hyk4mQ

After going this weekend to see the hunger games movie, I had to finally pick up mrs. Roths series. Well I had a little push, how about book one divergent is set to release on the big screen in March of 2014. I am a huge fan of dystopian books. The freaking preview for her upcoming film left me thinking WTH and why have her books been sitting in my library unread for so long. Needless to say I went home and tackled this book in one night. I couldn't put it down.

This is the story of Beatrice. She has grown up her whole life as a stiff/plain jane in a sense. However she had always felt she was different. Well the day finally comes when her life's path should be laid out in front of her, simulation day! However her simulation is inconclusive. What does this mean? She is unique and potentially a threat. She is divergent!  Warned to keep her divergent status a secret she still must make a choice about which faction she should be with.

Those who blamed ignorance became the Erudite.”
Ruling out Erudite was the only part of my choice that was easy.
“Those who blamed duplicity created Candor.”
I have never liked Candor.
“Those who blamed selfishness made Abnegation.”
“I blame selfishness; I do.
“And those who blamed cowardice were the Dauntless.” -tris

Her choice was dauntless. Omg let the craziness begin. Up first let's jump off of a moving train and jump from a skyscraper into a bottomless pit. Then let's have a no wholes barred evaluation period of arm to arm combat and more mind simulation. The road that lay ahead for tris wasn't an easy one by any means. BUT it a good thing she had eye candy/ crush on the instructor hottie, Four. Oh but there is so much more to this man than what lies upon the surface. The chemistry between four and tris is a very sweet read.
However there happy times together are quite limited due to the war brewing amongst the factions. Who can you trust? This question was seriously popping in and out of my head the whole book. Everyone has secrets and in this read sometimes the supposed enemy is a friend or are they just out for themselves?

As this book plays out we see a power play for a world take over. The key players are not just from one faction, which again brings to the table the question who can you trust? ....maybe family??? I loved the start to this series. I can't wait to see the movie in March 2014. Great job mrs. Roth. I'll be starting book 2 soon!

Saving Alexander by Susan Mac Nicol Book Review & Giveaway

Punishing himself for a horrific past that is not his fault, bestselling author Alexander Montgomery seeks redemption and love—and perhaps he will find it.

Famous author though he may be, Alexander Montgomery is not someone you take home to meet Mother. Seriously flawed, damaged by a horrific past, he’s trying hard to claw his way back to normality. But how can anyone respect what he truly is? His therapy involves regular sessions at Study in Scarlet, an exclusive S&M club.

Then comes Sage. Tall, with black hair and blue eyes, an up-and-coming actor with impossible charm and boy-next-door good looks, he’s the perfect choice to play the leading man in a TV adaptation of Alex’s last best-seller. Even more, he is a man you introduce to your family. Which Alex would do—if he weren’t taken by another man who offers the punishments Alex prays will wipe away the past and make him the person he wants to be. Yet, perhaps there is another path to redemption. If only the solution would reach out and touch him.

Susan Mac Nicol is also author of The Magick of ChristmasConfounding Cupid, Cassandra by Starlight Together in Starlight and the best-sellingStripped Bare.

This was my first nook by mrs. Nicol.  This was also my first go at M/M. Mrs. Nicol gave her readers a pretty dark read as Alexander's love story was told. Unfournately to save the man you had to know the past from which he came. This book is not for the faint of heart.

No one ever said love was easy and for sage/Alexander it's not. Alexander's demons are heartbreaking. They have left a broken man that has to use S&M as a source of therapy. Sage coming into Alexander's life was refreshing at moments. The banter between these two sometimes made you forget about the darkness but trust me it was only temporary. Sage also had his past to deal with at moments. Though he wasn't as broken as Alexander his scars ran deep.

This love story was one of survival. These two men were a life line for each other in some serious dark moments. Their love story wasn't roses/chocolates but it was still unforgettable. Great job mrs. Nicol!
