Excerpts from “Winter Fire” (#3, Witchlings Series) byLizzy Ford

Excerpt #1:

Summer.

Her eyes flew open at the soft summons. Summer rosequickly and quietly, certain not to disturb her roommate,Biji. She pulled on a heavy jacket over her pajamas, swept her long hair into a loose ponytail and tiptoed down the hallway to the stairwell that led from the girls’ dorm area of the schoolhouse to the main floor and common areas. The large, log structure was silent, its occupants sleeping. No smells or sounds came from the kitchen yet, indicating it was sometime in the middle of the night before four, when the cooks began preparing breakfast.

Outside, it was freezing and the night sky clear. Her breath floated upwards, and air magick greeted her. It zipped through her body while the quiet earth magickwarmed her feet.

Halfway down the driveway leading to the school, hewas waiting for her. Summer’s heart quickened the way it did every time she saw him. At night, the magick of the Master of Dark was more powerful, unfurling around him in a black fog that settled at his feet. He waited with his hands crossed before him and his stance wide. He wasn’t allowed closer to the school, now that it was common knowledge that Dark students were causing the Light source beneath the school to shrink.

Sometimes, he still scared her. Sometimes, she remembered when she’d looked into his soul and saw the Darkness looking back at her.

Summer shook her head to clear the thought and ran down the driveway to her boyfriend, best friend – her world. She stopped in front of him and gazed up at him, searching his face for signs of the Darkness.

It wasn’t there, but there was blood on his jeans, a dark splash in the moonlight.

“Rough night,” he said in a gruff voice.

“It’s okay, Decker,” she whispered. “You’re here now.” Summer instinctively took his face in her hands.

He shuddered, his arms circling her to pull her into his body. He was strong and athletic, his body honed by the hundreds of laps a week he swam. A triple element – fire, water, spirit – his magick kept him from feeling the cold of winter the way she did. It swirled through her, a combination of warm and cool, before his fire magickpushed away her chill. His fire magick was capable of more than warmth; it lit the desire already swirling in her blood.

“Behave,” she said with a smile.

Excerpt #2

“Since we both agreed that we’ll never see each other after tonight … can I kiss you?”

Morgan’s heart nearly stopped at the question then jolted into action again, soaring as fast as her fire magick in response. She found herself speechless.

“Just one. Just to see what might’ve been,” Beck said. “Then I promise, I’ll leave you alone for good.”

“Is this the only way to get rid of you?” she asked finally.

He laughed out loud.

“’Cuz that’s the only reason I’ll do it.”

“Yes!” he said, eyes twinkling. “It’s the only way to get rid of me for good.”

“Alright. If I must.”

Beck’s smile was wide. He cupped one cheek with his other hand and leaned forward, unburdened by the terror that was streaking through her. His earth magick flowed into her, warm and calming. She’d never kissed anyone since The Incident. She didn’t know what to expect or even if she wanted to now.

He rested his forehead against hers, his thumb lightlybrushing the skin of her jaw. Her breathing was uneven, and she gripped his other hand tightly, overwhelmed by the sensations of her excited emotions and fluttering thoughts. As if sensing her near-distress, more earth magick floated through her, soothing the fire.

Beck pulled back far enough that she could see the warmth in his eyes. The side of him that scared her at the wharf – where they were confronted by the Dark girl – wasgone, replaced by the boy she knew him to be.

“Trust me,” he whispered. “Just this once. Okay?”

She nodded and wet her lips. His face grew closer, and she closed her eyes in anticipation. Uncertain what to expect, she was surprised by how warm and soft his lips were against hers. His kiss was light, and warm electricity pulsed through her, a mixing of her fire and his earth. Desire lit within her, and her magick rallied with it, intrigued by the new kind of burning in her blood.

She liked his kiss and the way it made her body come alive.

Excerpt #3

Morgan stared at Beck, wishing her body didn’t respond the way it did whenever he was around. His gaze was steady but twinkling, as if he already knew what she’d decide. Nervous, uncertain, Morgan swallowed hard. Her mouth was dry, and she felt like running. If she let him in, she risked hurting them both.

“Why?” she forced herself to ask.

“Because I think we belong together,” he said then shifted. “I don’t know if I can protect you from the problems I have, and that terrifies me. Maybe it makes me weak. I don’t know, but the thought of not being with you scares me more.”

His heartfelt words struck her hard. He was right. She was scared. Trusting someone else with her thoughts, body and secrets? Since The Incident, she hadn’t done that, and she’d been so alone. Abruptly, she felt angry with her uncle. Even from across the country, he was controlling her, making her too afraid to trust herself or someone else, when she wanted to know what that felt like not to be alone. Even if for only a couple of weeks.

“You’re not weak,” she said. “You’re perfect.”

“Perfectly flawed,” he joked.

“No, Beck. Perfect. I wish I could show you what I see,” she said. “I wish I was like you.”

Excerpt #4

A line of fire witchlings was entrusted with the soul stone, a rock filled with concentrated Darkness.

Fire witchlings like Morgan.

Why did Morgan have this … thing that was capable of destroying Light? Capable of destroying him?

Beck felt cold. He’d trusted Dawn, too, before she turned out to be a crazy kidnapping killer. Had he made the same mistake with Morgan?

“I didn’t hear you,” she said, emerging from the bathroom. “What did you …” She stopped.

Beck looked at her. Her attention flew from the rock to him.

“Why do you have this?” he asked in a low, calm voice.

Guilt then panic crossed her features. Beck reached for it.

“No, Beck!” she cried.

He picked it up. Ice flew through him. It froze hismagick and chilled its warmth. The sensations within him were too fast for him to counter. His blood slowed and his lungs froze, making breathing impossible.

Beck staggered. Morgan tried to catch him, and they both dropped to the ground. Her fire tore through him, preventing the Darkness of the rock from stopping his heart. In the distance, she was calling his name, her tears like drops of lava on his face.

Blackness swept through his mind.
