Wounded by Jasinda Wilder BOOK REVIEW

AMAZON DESCRIPTION

War has taken everything from me. My family. My home. My innocence. In a country blasted by war and wracked by economic hardship, a young orphan girl like me has very few options when it comes to survival. Thus, I do what I must to live, to eat, and I try very hard to not consider the cost to my soul. My heart is empty, and my existence brutal.

The one impossibility in my life is love.

And then I meet HIM.

~ * ~ * ~
War is hell. It takes a chunk out of a man's very soul to do the kinds of things war demands of you. You live with fear, you live with guilt, and you live with nightmares. If you haven't been through it, there's no understanding it. War leaves no room for love, no room for tenderness or softness. You gotta be hard, closed off, and ready to fight every moment of every day. Lose focus for a split second, and you're dead.

Now the only thing that can save me is HER.

Book Review:

To say I LOVED this book would be an understatement! This was my first book dealing with the War in IRAQ. Have you ever read a book that was so emotionally on point that it felt REAL? That’s the way Mrs. Wilder told this story, and it was an emotional ride till I turned the very last page. She not only gives the reader a story from the American solider's POV (Hunter), but we also see through the eyes of Rania, a young Iraqi girl fighting to survive.

This is Rania and hunter's Love story but its so much more. There Journey together in times of war is heart wrenching.  While reading this book a few quotes stuck in my mind the whole time as I read:

“ Stray bullets do not recognize American or Iraqi. They only know soft flesh and red blood.”- Rania

“I pray and I let myself cry for him, because if he has a mother, or sister, or a wife, I know they would want someone to weep his death.”- Rania

Hunter/Rania's  story is one of WAR, Fear, Survival, Loss and LOVE (just to name a few things). Lets talk about Hunter........He is a Marine (ooh-rah), orphan, a man trying to find that thing in life to make him feel complete, and oh ya he’s still in love with his cheating no good high school sweetheart (READ THE BOOK). Rania is the ROCK of her family, at least what’s left of them. She is a SURVIVOR.  On her journey of survival, she has killed, stolen and become the local town prostitute.  Rania and hunter's story begins after an inner city attack. They both watch the two most important people left in there lives DIE (Or so they think). After the attack hunter is badly injured but Rania saves him….. Let the LOVE STORY BEGIN!!!

What would you do if the lines of communication were open, but you didn't understand a word? Welcome to rania/ hunter’s world. Struggling with the communication barrier forced them to get to know/learn about each other through body language, emotions, etc. The attraction, friendship and LOVE for one another these two built in this book is AMAZING.

Her beauty captured me, imprisoned my capacity for language.”- Hunter

“He does not just fill my body, my womanhood. He fills ME. My heart, my soul. He fills the horrible emptiness that has gaped inside me all my life. The moment he slid into me, I knew, it has just taken me this long to understand the strange feeling flowing in my veins in place of blood: HAPPINESS.”--Rania

As this book continues to play out, we see Rania/ Hunter fight for the LOVE they have built (heart wrenching). Everything from War, Rape, loneliness, heart break, survival, and love were touched on in this book…....Mrs. wilder never gave us a dull moment.  As I stated before I LOVED this book. While it was a love story it touched on so many deeper issues which took it over the top for me.

As I was recovering from my book hangover, I came across this picture.........I don’t think I could have said it better myself.

Despite the crap hand of life hunter/Rania were dealt........Once they recognized what was right in front of them.................They both found that final piece that was missing: HAPPINESS!

"But for weeks afterward, she sometimes sees that little girl in the mirror, sees her in the flash of hair so black it is almost blue, in the wide, dark brown eye that now hold love, happiness and completion."- Rania
