If I Lie by Corrine Jackson Book Review

Goodreads Description:

A powerful debut novel about the gray space between truth and perception.

Quinn’s done the unthinkable: she kissed a guy who is not Carey, her boyfriend. And she got caught. Being branded a cheater would be bad enough, but Quinn is deemed a traitor, and shunned by all of her friends. Because Carey’s not just any guy—he’s serving in Afghanistan and revered by everyone in their small, military town.

Quinn could clear her name, but that would mean revealing secrets that she’s vowed to keep—secrets that aren’t hers to share. And when Carey goes MIA, Quinn must decide how far she’ll go to protect her boyfriend…and her promise.

Book Review:

This book was actually recommended to me a while back by a friend and of course it's been sitting in my library until I decided to start it late one night before bed. BAD IDEA! Let’s just say I didn't finish it till the wee hours of the morning. I couldn't put it down! This was my first read by Mrs. Jackson and all I can say is AMAZING.

This book was an emotional/tough read for me. This is Quinn's story of how her life went from perfect one minute to a living HELL the next. As this story starts we see Quinn is the center of attention not just at school but in her whole town. Let me add not the good kind of attention. Quinn is being ostracized/bullied by her friends, classmates, towns’ people and even her father. Her crime....cheating on her boyfriend (Carey) who's deployed overseas and of course he's the home town hero. But was it really cheating?

You know the saying a picture is worth a thousand words, well in Quinn's case it really is. An intimate picture of her and another man was leaked online by a HATING/JEALOUS classmate. Unfournately, Quinn's one chance to clear her name would require her to break a promise to Carey she swore she would keep. It was so many moments in this book I wanted to scream and say he doesn't deserve your loyalty. Despite everything the people she loved most in the world turned their backs on her and threw her to the wolves...... Including the man she really loved (yup the guy in the picture). Needless to say I didn't care for him at all in this story. He never had her back at all. What type of man lets the woman he loves be bullied etc.?

This journey Mrs. Jackson took us on was Quinn's and Quinn's alone. I honestly loved Quinn's character. Despite her situation there were times she could have taken the easy way out but she weathered the storm ALONE. AND for that it made her a stronger/wiser person. I honestly don't know if I could have endured what Quinn did but when I read the final pages of this book that ends her journey, I was sooooo proud of her!

This book has easily made its way to my must read list of 2013. Great job Mrs. Jackson!

Ill end with some of my favorite quotes.....

“What I know: a) Carey is alive b)George is dying c) life just isn’t fucking fair "-Quinn

"Some words hit you like a tree branch slapping you in the face. And some words rip into your flesh, leaving scars so deep, they never completely fade."-Quinn

Book Rating: A+/5 stars

  1. This is one of those books that shakes you up, that keeps you turning the pages with a fast paced plot and motivated characters, but then it levels up and makes you think about the cost of freedom. It makes you realize that integrity can be a lonely place. It makes you hope that you've never muddied up your feet in the grey swamp of judgement. This is realistic fiction at its very best - if you enjoy books by Laurie Halse Anderson and John Green, I highly recommend IF I LIE.
