Good by S.Walden Book Review & Excerpt

Cadence Miller is a good girl. She just happens to make one terrible mistake her junior year in high school which costs her ten months in juvenile detention. Now a senior, she’s lost everything: her best friend, the trust of her parents, driving privileges, Internet access. It’s a lonely existence.

But there is one bright spot: Mark Connelly, her very cute, very off-limits 28-year-old calculus teacher. She falls hard for him—a ridiculous schoolgirl crush headed nowhere. She can’t help it. He’s the only good thing at Crestview High. She doesn’t expect him to reciprocate her feelings. How inappropriate, right? But he does. And he shows her.

And that’s when her life goes from bad to good.

S. Walden used to teach English before making the best decision of her life by becoming a full-time writer. She lives in Georgia with her very supportive husband who prefers physics textbooks over fiction and has a difficult time understanding why her characters must have personality flaws. She is wary of small children, so she has a Westie instead. Her dreams include raising chickens and owning and operating a beachside inn on the Gulf Coast (chickens included). When she's not writing, she's thinking about it.

She loves her fans and loves to hear from them. Email her at swaldenauthor@hotmail.com and visit her website at www.swaldenauthor.com to get up-to-date information on her current projects.

I stood at his door before lunch straining to hear the rhythmic beats pulsing low and steady from his laptop. The song was mellow and monotonous—understated sophistication—and I thought I should be having an intellectual conversation with someone while it played. I wanted it to be with Mr. Connelly, but the 59 percent on my math test suggested the conversation would sound more like this:

“Cadence, there are special classes for students like you.”

“Huh?”

“You need to be in a special class for math.”

“I don’t understand.”

“Exactly.”

I considered walking away. I was extra nervous to be near Mr. Connelly ever since the wet wipe incident. I still couldn’t figure out what he was doing. He had been just as remote and distant after the wet wipe incident as he was during the weeks that followed my lunch from Moe’s. Back and forth. Back and forth. He was giving me a headache.

In any case, I needed help. I could not fail math. I had to graduate, so I pushed through the door before I lost my nerve. He looked up from the stack of papers in front of him, throwing his pencil carelessly on the desk. Like everything he’d been working on was suddenly unimportant.

“What’s up, Cadence?”

“It’s obvious I don’t understand anything,” I said, slapping my test in front of him. “I’m not stupid, though. I mean, just because I don’t understand derivatives doesn’t mean I’m a freaking idiot.”

I shuffled my feet and hung my head low, biting nervously on my bottom lip.

“No one said you were an idiot,” Mr. Connelly replied, turning off the music.

I looked up and saw a slight grin on his face. Glad he found me amusing.

“Well, a 59 percent sure does look stupid,” I said sulkily.

“We’ll make it better,” he said.

“How?”

“I’m starting tutoring sessions next week after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays,” he replied.

I bit my lower lip harder. How could I stay after school? I had no ride home and was not asking my parents to pick me up. They both worked anyway and wouldn’t be able to.

I shook my head and shrugged. “Oh well.” Again with the instant tears. I had a knack for being out-of-control emotional around this guy.

“What does that mean?”

“I can’t stay after school. I have no ride home.” My lower lip quivered.

“Hmm.” He swiveled in his chair and scratched his cheek. “Well, you can’t fail calculus or you won’t graduate. And I suspect you wanna graduate and get the hell out of here.” He looked up at me expectantly.

I nodded, fighting the tears. I thought about Oliver’s intramural soccer game this weekend and how boring it’d be. There. That seemed to work. I felt my eyes drying up.

“Don’t worry, Cadence,” Mr. Connelly said. “I’ll work something out.”

“How?”

“Don’t worry about it. Just leave it to me,” he replied, then took a sip of his Orange Crush.

I smiled. “I’ve never seen anyone over the age of eleven drink Orange Crush.”

“Well, my friends in college gave me hell over it,” he replied. “Apparently in college you drink iced lattés. That’s what you do.”

“Duly noted,” I said.

Mr. Connelly cleared his throat and looked down at the papers on his desk. I took it as a signal to leave. I turned around, then froze at his words.

“I’ve got something for you,” he said.

“You do?” I asked, turning back around to face him. He dug around in his messenger bag.

“Yeah. Just give me a second to find it . . .”

I stood nervously pulling on the buttons of my shirt. My girlish heart and brain thought it might be a flower or a box of chocolates. I was an idiot, okay?

“Here we go,” he said, and pulled out a CD. He handed it to me. “I remember you said you couldn’t get on the Internet. Thought you might wanna listen to ‘Midnight in a Perfect World’ since you were curious about it.”

I blushed, hanging my head so that he couldn’t see. This was way better than chocolates or a flower.

“I did,” I whispered. “In computer class.” I didn’t have to tell him that, but I wanted to. I wanted to hear his reaction.

“Oh? When you were supposed to be working?” The question came out as a flirty admonishment. And that’s the reaction I wanted.

I shook my head. “I finished my work first.” I looked up at Mr. Connelly.

“And what did you think?” he asked.

“I thought it was . . . perfect.”

His stare made me uncomfortable and extremely excited. I wanted to know what he was thinking, but I wouldn’t dare ask. It looked utterly private and off limits.

“Would you like to keep the CD for a while?” he asked.

“You won’t miss it?”

He shook his head. “I’ve got an iPod.”

“Okay. Thanks,” I replied, and tucked the CD securely in my bag. “Who were you listening to when I came in?”

“DJ Premier,” he replied.

“Another DJ?”

“Uh huh.”

“What’s the song called?”

“‘Teach the Children’,” he said with a smirk.

“You’ve gotta be kidding me.”

Mr. Connelly chuckled. “I’m really not. The song is called ‘Teach the Children’.”

“So what? Is that, like, inspiration for you when you’re planning out your lessons?”

He cocked his head slightly and considered me. “You’re funny. And yes, maybe it is inspiration.”

I swear his eyes burned holes into my face. He was so . . . intense. But a quiet, stable kind of intense, if such a thing could exist. I stood awkwardly, waiting for him to dismiss me.

“You should go to lunch, Cadence,” he said, a faint smile playing on his lips.

“I should?”

“Mmhmm.”

“Okay.” I turned to leave.

“I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“Mmhmm,” was all I could say.

Mrs. Walden is by far one of my new favorite authors of this year. This is my second read by her and she hasn't disappointed me yet. This book brings to mind the oldie "if loving you is wrong I don't want to be right".  This is the school girl falls in love with the teacher love story. I've read a few student teacher relationship books but this one by far had the biggest age difference, 10 years. But what can I say some women like an older man.

"Emotions are there own universal language"

This quote pretty much described this whole book for me. Yes I was an emotional mess but I got to also live the anguish of a high school girl that desperately wanted to be The GOOD GIRL again. Oh how I don't miss high school!! Candace has been a good girl her whole life, but even the good ones get curious sometimes. Her curiosity put  her in Juvie for 10 months and she became the victim of bullying at her high school. To the rescue not once but twice was mark Connelly aka mr. Dream boat her teacher.

This was not your typical school girl meets teacher crush/torrid love affair. This was a love story of a girl lost trying to find her way and live with the choices she had made. Along  the way she picks up some unusual friends and develops a friendship that should be forbidden. The friendship that mark and Candace develop was an emotional one and it got even more emotional when it blossomed in to something more.

This one was great. It will make you think what really is the definition of love? And who gets to determine who you can/can't love? Great job mrs. Walden on this emotional roller coaster. I Look forward to reading more from you.

Cheers,
Dr. Books

Reckless by Skye Jordan Review

Synopsis:

"Hotter than hell and a lot more fun. Skye Jordan's writing sizzles!"
-Elisabeth Naughton, New York Times bestselling author

A couture wedding dress designer to the rich and famous, Lexi LaCroix's image means everything. Raised on the wrong side of the tracks, her years of polish and hard work are finally about to pay off. But crossing paths with a sexier-than-sin, bad-boy biker who makes her realize how much living she's sacrificed for her success, one touch is all it takes to threaten her carefully choreographed life.

Jax Chamberlin has been screwed over by gorgeous gold-diggers one too many times. Though he runs his own stunt company, all of America knows his Hollywood face even years after he's given up acting. Finding a woman who doesn't plan to use him as a stepping stone to success is virtually impossible, so when the charming and mysterious Lexi offers him a chance at a totally anonymous hook-up during an out of town trip, Jax accepts. Only Lexi is more sextacular than charming, and Jax wants more. Lots more.

But Lexi's got a major hang-up over his renegade lifestyle. And if she finds out his connections could catapult her to the top of her career, he's afraid the fantasy woman he's falling for might just end up like all the rest.

Time moves on, it's the big day, did he accept her invitation that was hand delivered?  Will he stay away?

Irreplaceable by Angela Graham Review

Synopsis:

It wasn’t his fault she lay broken and battered. He wasn’t responsible for the injuries covering her bruised body.
Her heart, however, told a different story. She endured the pain of its jagged edges as it shattered against her chest, ripping through the hope she once held. Her spirit was broken, and only one man was to blame for that.
Cassandra Clarke had known better than to trust her all to a man like Logan West. She’d thought he was different—a better man than he’d portrayed to others. A man worth risking it all for.
But she was wrong, and would never make that mistake again.

What happens when you question everything you longed to believe—deny all emotions you still hold for a man unworthy of them?

Faced with Logan’s persistence, Cassandra must find the strength to keep her guard up or risk falling again for the one man her body feels…is irreplaceable.

Book 2 of Cassandra & Logan's story.

If you haven't already, check out book 1, Inevitable on sale now for $.99

This is an absolute must read! I loved book 1 and book 2 definitely didn't disappoint. I'm seeing a lot of people saying that it was dragged out. For me? no, not at all. The story picks up where book 1 ended and you are taken through the emotions of Cassandra and how much Logan hurt her. Yes, a lot of times I wan't to strangle her because she was fighting her feelings for him throughout the book. In a lot of books out there today, it's like a whirlwind romance in where it happens so fast. Not that case at all in this story which makes me appreciate that author that much more because you get to feel everything that is happening. I love Logan in this series and although he was such an egotistical prick in the first one, he really redeems himself in this story. I hate Natasha worth a passion and not looking forward to book 3 because of that reason, although, I absolutely cant wait to get my hands on it. I really liked Jax, Logan's brother in this series but at the end of this book, I really hope I don't end up hating him in next.

Conflicted by Sophie Monroe Book Review

When you think about your life are there things you would reverse?
Derek Scott is the twenty-six year old drummer of Battlescars. With a past marred by tragedy, he has a hard time letting people in. He's also made his share of mistakes. Now, he's trying to come to terms with the choices he has made recently and what they mean for him.
When someone from his past comes back into his life, Derek thinks maybe he can get back on track. However, things unravel, leaving him more unclear than ever. Sophie Monroe is a twenty-something author from New Jersey. Her rock & roll romance series, Battlescars, is an Amazon and USA TODAY best seller.
-Battlescars:A Rock & Roll Romance (book I)
-Afflicted (book II)
-Conflicted (book III) (releasing 9.25.13)

You can find her on Facebook @ www.facebook.com/sophiemonroewrites or shoot her an email @ sophiemonroe007@hotmail.com. She loves to hear from you guys!

Sophie, Sophie, Sophie. You amaze me every single time I read a book of yours. This is the BEST one of the Battlescars Series and that's saying something because who doesn't love Jake and Blake (yes, that rhymes lol) This is unlike any of the other two in the series. You don't see too much of Derek in the others which makes you really wonder about him. Let's just say the title of this book is definitely appropriate. He is so conflicted with so many things in his life that it's one big mess to deal with.

Then, you have Joss which I love by the way who is so care free and doesn't seem to have a care in the world. Their connected is WOW and it'll ROCK YOUR SOCKS :) you get a lot of different POV in this story which is great because you get the different side of each one. The one thing that is so different than the others is that I was so focused the entire time because you just had to know what comes next. Sophie has you guessing the entire book and you will definitely have some drop you jaw moments and be like wow didn't see that coming. So job well done Sophie for being bad ass :)

Cheers,
Holly

Going Long by Ginger Scott Book Review

They fell in love in high school and found their way back to one another despite the odds. But can first loves really be forever? For Reed Johnson, the dream was always football. But then Nolan Lennox took over his heart. Is he willing to give up his first love just to keep his true love? Or will he be too late? Reed and Nolan’s story continues in "Going Long," sequel to "Waiting on the Sidelines."

Ginger Scott is a writer and journalist from Peoria, Arizona. Her debut novel, "Waiting on the Sidelines," is a coming-of-age love story that explores the real heartbreak we all feel as we become adults throughout our high school years. The story follows two characters, Nolan (a Tomboy with a baseball player's name) and Reed (the quarterback she wishes would notice her) as they struggle with peer-pressure, underage drinking, bullying and finding a balance between what your heart wants and what society says you should want -- even if you aren't ready. You can read her book now in Amazon's kindle store.

Scott has been writing and editing for newspapers, magazines and blogs for more than 15 years. She has told the stories of Olympians, politicians, actors, scientists, cowboys, criminals and towns. For more on her and her work, visit her website at http://www.littlemisswrite.com

Okay when was the last time a book really pissed you off to the point that if you didn't stop reading you'd throw your laptop, kindle or book right out the window>

This one did that for me.  SERIOUSLY!

Leave Nolan and Reed alone already!  They've gone through enough in high school and it just all followed them to college.  Just when you think everything was going right, smooth and wonderful kaboom!  Here comes another hurdle.  Nolan being pregnant, then thinking back to the past when Reed was tricked into thinking Tatum was pregnant and losing his scholarship. She didn't want that happening to him again, not with everything going so good with his football scholarship, his trying to decide whether to enter the draft or not.  They both thought the other was ignoring them, Gavin nor Jenny helped much.  Okay more Gavin than anyone.  Noles takes it so bad that she does the unthinkable, drunk of course, but still.  Then the dude decides to play it up and let Gavin think he spent the night with "his girl."  In comes Jenny who just happens to be Dylan Nichols' cousin and does a strip in front of a very drunk Reed.

Reed learns the truth about it all,, and swears that nothing is EVER going to separate him and Noles again.

Is there a happily ever after?  OMG, with these two who knows.  The way this book ends, makes one believe that maybe there is.

Let's just say my kindle, laptop and book are all still in one piece.

Cheers,
Steph

In Love by Design Blog Tour Banner
A Date with Fate for .99 cents the entire two weeks of the tour Sept 16-27

Synopsis:

In Love by Design

The Adventures of Anabel Axelrod

(Volume III)
By Tracy Ellen

Cover Art by Samantha Prudhon Falkowski

In Love by Design welcomes you back to Northfield, Minnesota and the life of Anabel Axelrod.

Its official--the sexy, blonde bookstore owner with a sassy attitude, a brain that never stops, and a reluctant penchant for helping her family and friends out of trouble has fallen madly in love.

Anabel doesn't get to prove what a fabulous girlfriend she'll make for more than eight hours before Luke disappears out of town. Instead of getting to enjoy being a girl passionately in love, Anabel’s shiny new feelings and trust in her boyfriend are immediately being tested.

Who is the darkly powerful and charismatic Luke Drake? What are his secrets? Does he really love Anabel, or has he been manipulating her to further an intricate plan of cold revenge in the making for over twenty years?

This third book in the series finds the confident Anabel desperately needing her sense of humor and all her understanding of human nature to deal with life. But Anabel soon learns the hard way she has even bigger issues to worry about than family problems and an incredibly hot, but very tricky boyfriend.

She’s made some bad enemies recently and someone wants her dead. After the first attempt on her life, Anabel and Luke team up to solve this mystery, but Anabel is beginning to wonder if she can trust her Dark Prince. Or Is this one fairy tale where love does not conquer all?

OMG! This series was such a fun read! You get comedy, drama, suspense, action, and of course romance!!! The characters are funny and witty and of course steamy!! I think each book got better than the last.
This is the 3rd in the Adventures of Anabel Axelrod series.

Anabel is our bookstore owner and one of the funnest characters to follow in a series. She is smart, spunky  and absolutely in love with the mysterious man Luke Drake. Luke Drake is of course HOT HOT HOT!!!! But nothing can be perfect and Anabel starts having doubts about Mr. Sexy Mystery Guy, she needs to figure out whether their love is real or just a plot for revenge.

This book is face passed and Anabel will keep you wanting more! There is NO cliffhanger! Your emotions will be on a rollercoaster and your brain will be working double time! Anabel would make one badass friend! Tracy has definatly made a new fan with me! I love when we get fun and sarcastic characters to follow; probably cause I am not that quick of a thinker lol. I am one of those that after 20 mins I will think of a good comeback.

Definitly recommend this series, I can't imagine any genre lover that would not enjoy it!

 Excerpt:

“Perfect timing, I was just going to come find you,” I called out, looking through the rest of the pastry offerings and trying to decide which would tide me over until lunch. At the silence, I finally glanced over at the back entry to see Luke checking me out from the door.
I shook my head and wagged my finger. “Oh no, I recognize that look and I’m all ready to go to lunch.” Today, my long hair is down and straight. I’m wearing a short, black dress with a high, round neckline and fitted waist, and black suede boots. The fabric clings tightly to my body in all the right places. Motioning down my body, I stated, “You had your chance at this, but stayed in the barn.”
Luke didn’t say anything, just stalked towards me.
“No, no, no!” Backing away towards the dining room, I laughed and said, “No muss, no fuss!”
His smile is sharp and predatory, his tail is snapping. “Back in the barn, you didn’t smell so good or look so hot like you do now.” He ignored my outraged choke of laughter, his gaze running down my dress. He cocked a black brow. “Stockings again, and lace,” he murmured. “I warned you about stockings, Anabel.”

Author Bio:
Meet Tracy Ellen…
For all of my life, I’ve always had a thing for shoes that make me say “Oh, yum!” and for reading romance novels written about hot, dangerously smart men and sassy, intelligent women. It’s not an exaggeration to say I’ve avidly read everything I could get my greedy little hands on to find these jewels.
One day this past year or so, I realized that I spend more money on books now than I do on shoes--and I was stunned. Should I be ashamed of this fact or proud? Then an even stranger thing happened. It was like a switch turned off/on inside me. All of a sudden instead of wanting to read about diabolically sexy men, I wanted to write my own story of the building hot romance between a lippy, confident woman and a gorgeously mysterious man.
So began my budding writing career. Then I made another happy discovery—I absolutely love writing and still have a thing for shoes! Since then, my self-published books include A Date with Fate and Courted by Karma in The Adventures of Anabel Axelrod series. The third book in the series, In Love by Design will be released in September 2013.
For those of you who may want to know some pertinent facts: I was born in Indiana to middle-class parents, the third out of five hellions. My mother wanted to go to work every day. I’ve always lived in the Midwest, except for six steamy months in Florida when I was nineteen. Currently, I reside in the suburbs of St. Paul, Minnesota with my family. The college town of Northfield featured in Anabel’s Adventures is just down the road a jaunt.
I love, love, love connecting with readers. Comments, posts, reviews, and emails are always welcome. Follow my blog or like me on Facebook to be aware of events and giveaways, or new books I’m publishing.
Thanks again for reading my books and supporting this indie author!
